Below you will find a short summary with more information about the virus:
• The virus is a so-called corona virus.
• A corona virus is a specific type of virus with a certain form and properties. More types of corona viruses are known, but the corona virus that is currently all about is a new type of corona virus that can infect people and make them sick. Because it is a new virus, there is no immunity in humans yet, so the virus can spread quickly to large groups of people. The WHO later named the virus COVID-19. The number 19 refers to the year 2019 in which the virus originated.
• The coronavirus is mostly transferable by people with symptoms of the disease. The more complaints, the more contagious. People without complaints are less contagious.
• Complaints resemble flu: feeling sick, fever, muscle aches, cough.
• The incubation period is on average 2-7 days, but can take up to 14 days (time between infection and onset of complaints).
• Not everyone becomes (seriously) ill. The vast majority of people experience mild or moderate illness and then become immune. Just like with a normal flu. Only a few people are so sick that they have to be hospitalized. This often concerns the elderly or already sick people with poor defense. The mortality percentage is currently around 2%. That is slightly higher than with a normal flu.
• There is no cure for the virus. Treatment consists of supportive measures in the hospital if necessary, but this is only necessary for seriously ill patients. A vaccine is not yet available.
• The virus is transmitted by very small moisture droplets that are released during coughing and sneezing. The virus can also be transmitted by kissing or embracing. The virus is already harmless for a few minutes outside the body.
• Good hygiene ensures that the virus cannot spread quickly. Advises are:
o cough and sneeze in your elbow
o wash your hands regularly with soap for at least 20 seconds
o desinfect your hands regularly and certainly after washing with alcohol
o do not shake hands and limit kissing or embracing
o wearing a mouthcap has limited value unless you use a medically approved mouthcap according to the correct instructions. However, currently all types of mouth caps are currently very difficult to obtain due to high demand.
